At Saint Demetrios Cathedral, a Greek Orthodox Church in Astoria with a school attached, students participated in a service for Good Friday. In Corona, a neighborhood with a vibrant Latino community, it is not unusual to see thousands of Catholics on the streets during a feast day.
After services, volunteers pass out vegan meals in to-go containers — rice, dal, curries of pumpkin, eggplant — and bags of fresh produce. Currently, 50 children are enrolled in bar mitzvah classes. Others attend teen programs on civil rights history and current events. Manhattan is home to towering cathedrals and ornate synagogues, and it serves as the seat of power for mighty institutions, including the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York. Lamiaa Rafaey, the headmistress of Miraj, knows the world her students will graduate into, she said. For her, a core part of the school’s mission is to remind children that no matter what anyone says — on the street or on cable news — they are just as American as anyone else.
